Make your website
more secure and trustworthy!

As e-commerce becomes increasingly common, internet security or so called SSL certificates is becoming more and more important as well. Sensitive data such as credit card information, passwords and addresses should therefore be transferred over the internet in encrypted form. In addition, SSL encryption for your website is a positive ranking factor for search engines. We can configure the necessary settings for using an SSL certificate for you free of charge. You pay only the annual fee for the SSL certificate.

Explanation:
What is an SSL certificate for?

hs-icon-secure-closed

Security certificate

The SSL certificate protects data transfer to and from your website with 128/256-bit encryption, giving your website visitors better security. In addition, SSL certificates contain information about their owners, which is verified by the certifying authority to ensure unmistakeable identification of the certificate owner.

Trustmark

Use encryption whenever you work with sensitive data such as credit card details or personal information, for instance, if you are running an online shop. The certificate data visible to website visitors and which delivers trustworthy information via the domain owner increases the trustworthiness of a website many times over.

Quality label

To meet the varying standards of our customers, we offer three different SSL certificates and work with one of the leading certificate issuing authorities. Each SSL certificate works with an encryption level that meets the strictest security regulations and complies with the 128 or 256-bit industry standard.

Device compatibility

The SSL certificates from Hoststar are 99.3 percent compatible with the most popular web browsers, operating systems and customer platforms. Your visitors can therefore visit your website or web shop no matter what browser or device they are using and also provide their personal information in confidence and worry-free.

Free SSL Certificates
from Let's Encrypt

About Let's Encrypt you can embed a free SSL certificate on your site. The FreeSSL certificates from Let's Encrypt offer good basic protection when it comes to secure data transmission to and from a website. The free encryptions are automatically available for every domain and subdomain.

This model is best suited for sites without commercial intent. So if you run a blog or a forum, for example, a free SSL certificate is usually already a good starting point. However, if you have higher requirements, we recommend our cost-based SSL encryptions, as these include insurance protection, among other things.

What advantages does an SSL certificate from Hoststar give me?

Full compatibility, strict licensing criteria and thus the highest level of protection on the internet: These are the most important advantages that a certified SSL protocol brings you.

To meet the different requirements of our customers, we offer three different SSL certificates. We work together with one of the leading certificate issuers. Each of the SSL certificates offers 128 or 256 bits encryption. This meets the strictest security regulations and corresponds to the industry standard.

Our paid SSL certificates are 99.3 percent compatible with the most popular web browsers, operating systems and platforms. This means that your visitors can enter personal data with peace of mind—no matter which browser or device they use to visit your website or webshop.

Frequently asked questions
about SSL certificates and HTTPS encryption

What does an SSL certificate do?

The SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate is an encryption protocol and prevents third parties from being able to read the data exchanged between the web browser and the server. The certificate causes the data to be encrypted before transmission and then decrypted again. This protects sensitive data, such as credit card information or passwords.

Why an SSL certificate?

The encryption protocol is an important sign of trust and therefore also a factor necessary for good Google rankings. The more personal data a website's visitors disclose, the more important the SSL certificate—without this secure connection, data transmission is vulnerable to hacker attacks.

Is an SSL certificate mandatory?

No, SSL certificates are not mandatory. However, websites without the security symbol do not appear trustworthy, and many browsers even display a warning if no SSL certificate is present. SSL certificates are particularly indispensable as soon as (e.g. in an online shop) customers provide personal data.

What is a digital SSL certificate?

SSL is the abbreviation for Secure Sockets Layer and is an encryption protocol between the web server and e.g. the web browser. Strictly speaking, by the way, TLS (Transport Layer Security) is mostly used today, but one still uses the term SSL to refer to the service.

The basic principle works as follows: The data entered is first encrypted, then transmitted and only then decrypted again. This way, the information cannot be intercepted during the transfer.

The digital certificate contains several components:

  • a serial number
  • the expiration date of the certificate
  • a copy of the public certificate key (otherwise, only the owner possesses it)
  • the name of the certificate holder  (for OV and EV certificates)
  • a digital signature of the organisation that issued the SSL certificate
Is HTTPS the same as SSL?

Yes and no: HTTPS means Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure and means that internet pages are loaded into the web browser in an encrypted form. If the domain is preceded by https and a lock symbol, it means that the page has an SSL certificate and represents a secure connection.

Attention: If you purchase the certificate after the fact and want to retrofit your site, various measures must be implemented on the site to ensure that the change works smoothly; for example, http URLs must be redirected to https.

Do I optimise my Google ranking with SSL?

Definitely yes! As early as 2014, the SSL encryption protocol was officially confirmed as a ranking criterion. Although the certificate alone is unlikely to catapult a page to the top ranks, creating your website without it is not the best strategy from the point of view of search engine optimisation (SEO).

How can I install the SSL certificate?

With Hoststar you don't have to worry about your SSL certificate: We do the integration for you! You pay the annual fee for the certificate, we take care of the rest.

Are SSL certificates available for multiple domains?

Yes, this possibility exists. This is called multidomain or wildcard SSL. These certificates (such as Hoststar Premium SSL) are valid not only for the domain but also for the subdomains, i.e. not only for exampledomain.com but also for subpages such as shop.exampledomain.com.
